Kalimnell: The Life, Times and Death of Jeffrey Orton
Durmgard The Stone
Durmgard was not born from a god, nor created by a god. Rather he ascended to godhood in the oldest fashion. When durmgard was a young dwarf, he took to the stones. He took to mining them, sortin them, naming them, and carving them. But durmgard also had another great skill. He was a warrior, one of the kings personal bodygaurds before the dwarves had a god of thier own. In battle he was second to none and fiercly protected the king. However there came a time when even he found himself outmatched. A dragon almost as old as the mountains themselves attacked the great city of Furen, which was where the king resided. After many days of battle it finally came down to only three; durmgard, the king(whose name has been forgotten), and the dragon grex. However despite the dragons advances to try to slay both the king and durmgard, durmgard would not let him pass. And in the great city of furen, in the hall of Reiz, grex and durmgard fought for 14 days, never resting, never backing down, until grex, who possesed both enourmous patience and constituion, conceded to leave furen, with his blessing and a promise never to return in exchange for durmgards life. Such was durmgards honor and love for both his king and the great city, that he agreed, knowing that he would never truly be able to defeat grex. Once the dragon had killed Durmgard he informed the king that he had no intention of keeping his promise, and still intended to take furen for his own. The gods had already looked with favor upon durmgard for his bravery and his sacrifice however and durmgard once again stood between grex and the king. And now with his revived spirit he slew the ancient dragon. Although he had been granted power, durmgard remained in the service of the king until his death, when durmgard himself ascended the throne, and for two hundred and forty years he ruled, until finally he passed the hammer to the next king, brommin, to be watched over by the god of the dwarves. They called him durmgard the stone because even grex, a great and powerful force as old as the mountains, could not move him from his place.
